Cricket seems to be a baffling and challenging game

I’ve started reading a book, The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, which I’ve shown below, and so far I’m somewhat entertained by it, but I’m quite baffled by the game being played in Chapter 7 — cricket — so I’m asking anyone out there to explain it to me.

While waiting for an explanation from someone, I must rely upon this Britannica.com article, which seems thorough enough  — maybe too thorough — but the game still confuses me. Perhaps I’ll be limited forever in my understanding of cricket because I didn’t grow up in Britain.

So, here’s a thought: I wonder if I will be further challenged by even more in this book that is singularly British simply because I am an American reader. And what bafflement’s await me in other books by Dickens? Hmm.
